16 September 2017 Chinese mezzo-soprano YAJIE ZHANG (25) wins 51st International Vocal Competition 2017 - Opera | Oratorio


The Chinese mezzo-soprano YAJIE ZHANG (1992) has won the Grand Prix of the City of 's-Hertogenbosch during the 51st International Vocal Competition 2017. The singer also won the Opera Prize and the Prize of the Junior Jury. The British mezzo ANNA HARVEY (1987) has won the Oratorio Prize and the Prize of the Audience, while Russian tenor ANTON KUZENOK (1991) won the Arleen Auger Allround Prize and the Press Prize. Seven singers performed in the Finals of the IVC 2017 with the South Netherlands Philharmonic under conductor Kenneth Montgomery.

The jury of the Opera | Oratorio division is made up of a combination of renowned singers and representatives of the opera and concert worlds. It includes legendary soprano Cheryl Studer, mezzo-soprano Jennifer Larmore, tenor Zizheng Yu (University of Nanjing, China) and baritone Sergei Leiferkus, opera consultant Pieter Alferink, Joel Ethan Fried (artistic director, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam), Jesús Iglesias Noriega (head of artistic administration, Dutch National Opera Amsterdam) and Eva Wagner-Pasquier (opera manager, prev. Bayreuth Festival). Chairman of the jury was Nicholas Payne (director of Opera Europa).
