IVC Summer School on Russian Repertoire

in collaboration with the Dutch National Opera Talent

As part of its Talent Development policy and in collaboration with the Dutch National Opera Talent, the International Vocal Competition (IVC) is organising a Summer School on Russian opera and art song. Sixteen talented young singers will be selected to take part in the intensive week of training. The general public will be welcome to attend the public master classes, lectures and presentations. The Summer School will be held at the Theater aan de Parade in ’s-Hertogenbosch. The week will conclude with concerts on 11 September at the Theater aan de Parade at 7.30 p.m., and on 12 September at the National Opera & Ballet on the Waterlooplein in Amsterdam at 2 p.m.

The nineteenth century saw a flourishing of Russian opera. Its music is exceptionally theatrical and compelling and influences from Russian folk music can also often be heard. During the IVC Summer School, particular attention will be paid to the operatic works of Modest Mussorgsky, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergei Rachmaninoff.

The masters will be world-famous singers, such as the mezzo-soprano Larisa Dyadkova, who will perform later this season in The Queen of Spades (as the Countess) at the National Opera & Ballet in Amsterdam, and the baritone Sergei Leiferkus. Furthermore, the soprano Elena Vasilyeva will also be teaching. Leiferkus and Vasilyeva have performed in the opera A Dog’s Heart by Alexander Raskatov. In addition, the pianist/opera coach Lyuba Orfenova, who works with a number of major opera houses, will share her knowledge of Russian music with the participating singers and the general public. The conductor Alexander Humala will lead the ensembles, and Irina Sisoyeva will provide piano accompaniment and language coaching.
